Sugar & Spice: Embracing Sexuality in Asian Culture
For many Americans, it’s hard to imagine a culture that doesn’t or can’t openly express their sexuality, whether publicly through fashion or intimately with a partner. But for the Asian community, that’s been a reality for many generations. The expectations of tradition and society have long held Asian men and women back from feeling the confidence, satisfaction, and pleasure that come from embracing one’s sexuality.
One of the most common issues the Asian community faces in regard to their sexuality is the ability to talk about sex and sexuality with others. Not only does this put a strain on the individual suffering with unanswered questions and concerns, but it creates stress in their relationship, leading to resentment and shame.
It’s an important topic to address in today’s world. That’s why from August 1-15, the Relationship Center of Colorado’s founder and director, YY Wei, will be speaking at the Sugar and Spice Virtual Sex Festival. The festival is intended to celebrates sex and sexuality in the Asian community, which has often faced oppression and silencing due to cultural taboos and societal pressures. The aim of the festival is to impart a positive message and practical education, leading to improved self-esteem, more sexually satisfying relationships, and a more complete understanding of sexuality as a whole.
YY will be leading two different panels at the event. Both include interactive discussions with a Q&A or an exercise, and there is no prerequisite to attend.
Panel 1: Healing After An Affair To Have a Stronger Relationship (1.5 Hrs)
Infidelity has become more of the norm than the exception in modern days. Is it a deal breaker or can it be a catalyst to help couples have stronger relationships? In this workshop, YY will explore the topic of affairs/infidelity, their most common causes, their stages, and how to heal from them.
Panel 2: Navigating Desire Discrepancy (1.5 Hrs)
Desire discrepancy is a very common but also frustrating part of a relationship. Come join YY to learn myths and facts about desire discrepancy, common causes and strategies to navigate the dynamics so your relationship can have more fulfilling sex and intimacy.
Why Attend?
Unlike most Americans, many Asian communities are facing the hardships of infidelity and desire discrepancy without the confidence or even the ability to seek support from therapists or loved ones. It’s events like Sugar and Spice that provide an outlet for those silenced and shut down by tradition, and by promoting sex positivity and education, the hope is to change the way society treats those who express pride in their body and their sexuality.
