What is self-soothing and how can we use it to support our mental health?
Self-soothing allows us to step back and identify what we need at the moment to regulate our mind and body when we are experiencing overwhelm. Self-soothing can help us take control of a situation in which we feel out of control.
Let’s dive into some ways we can approach self-soothing.
Learn Your Triggers
We all have different types of triggers. When we know our triggers, we are better able to anticipate them and respond to them when we become triggered. Creating a relationship with our triggers allows us to develop awareness and coping mechanisms to deal with them.
Physically Relax Your Body
Often when we are triggered or overwhelmed, we don’t realize how much strain and stress we are carrying in our bodies. We tighten our chests, breathe more shallowly, tense up the muscles in our face and shoulders, etc.
When you realize you need to self-soothe, a good first step is always to take a deep breath and let your face, shoulders, and chest physically relax. Often making this physical decision helps our headspace as well.
What Can Self-Soothing Look Like?
